If you want to see a lot of non-touristy Russia cheaply yet comfortably
consider hiring me with this 4WD diesel truck and this 4-bed camper that
has a kitchen, a toilet, and a semblance of a shower.
If the cost of $300/day appears high, consider how much you'll save on hotels and restaurant meals! If travelling like a couple expect accommodation to cost you $50-100/night. About the same for food in semi-decent cafes. Public transportation is roughly 5-10 cents per person per kilometer. What does it add up to? Plus, you will not be limited by schedules and reservations. My comfortable daily travel distance is about 200 miles (300km) per day. Geographically, my area of expertise is between Moscow and St Petersburg but I'm not against other areas. The Golden Circle route is a bit too official to my taste but I can take you through Sergiev Posad, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Yaroslavl, Uglich etc. too. Usually a 3-4 day trip. I'm available any time of the year. Both the car and the camper are equipped for winter travel! In fact, I'll be promoting the winter travel concept as "authentic" as snow and cold define this country. A large comfortable desk and a 220V power supply from two batteries with the total capacity of 150Amp-hours make this camper suitable for journalists and film-makers who want to work on the road.

In September 2011, overcome with the urge to run away from it all, we, jointly with Alexandra (the one who measures Eider eggs in the Kola peninsula and rescues from oblivion eccentric Russian turn-of-the-century scientists [link to her bibliography!!), acquired this camper. Running away had to be postponed "thanks" to the kid who all of a sudden started doing well in a Moscow school. But the bills for this thing keep coming. Thus this attempt to make it partly pay for itself while allowing your travellers to have an immersion experience very inexpensively. |
